☠️ So straight off the bat, Nico was a happy, outright obnoxious (to Percy) kid with boundless curiosity until his older sister died while on a quest. He was also upset with her for joining the Hunters of Artemis and leaving him to live at Camp Half-Blood alone. Understandable.
☠️ Percy tells him about not keeping his promise of Bianca being safe and runs away to the Underworld, holding a grudge against Percy for mixed reasons. Don't worry, Nico has a plan and that plan is to bring Bianca back.
☠️ This is also the first instance of Nico figuring out that he has a crush on Percy and that leads to low key fuel his self-hatred. His self-hatred truly only grows as Hades says to his face that he's weaker than Bianca would've been if she was still alive; what he perceives as being outcast from both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter; getting dragged into Tartarus alone and then captured by twin Giants who seal him in a jar that they used to imprison Ares, and being seen as a possible enemy by Jason up until the Cupid Incident. All of it compounds on top of each other to form the bedrock of his self-hatred.
☠️ The Cupid Incident is when he gets outed as gay by Eros/Cupid with Jason as the unwilling audience, which he has staunchly been trying to ignore because, you know. He was born in Mussolini-era Italy. The only good thing to come out of this is the fact that Jason is his best friend for life.
☠️ Also Nico killed a guy because the kid was threatening to out Reyna for committing patricide, which is just barely below treason in terms of Roman sensibilities for crimes.
☠️ No, for real, Nico literally sent this STILL LIVING TEENAGER TO THE FIELDS OF PUNISHMENT (because said teenager's an oath-breaker, serial killer in the making, and sadistic torturer and the oath-breaker part is a HUGE no-no for both Roman and Greek Underworlds). JUST COMPLETELY BYPASSED THE JUDGES AND TURNED THIS KID INTO A GHOST TO SUFFER ETERNAL TORMENT.
☠️ Nico can't stand leaving someone behind, which is why he goes off on a quest back into Tartarus to rescue Bob the Titan. He WOULD'VE gone in by himself, but Will convinces him to take him along and he reluctantly agrees because he doesn't want his boyfriend to suffer like he did. They're fine it's fine.
☠️ He's a hot mess, but he's always been a good person. Nico just doesn't see it himself.
☠️ But grudges are his fatal flaw. This is a very common one for Hades' children, unfortunately.

AU History: Nico was born into a family with a long line of powerful mages. His mother was a woman who was the daughter of an Italian ambassador and a strong spirit medium in her own right, and his father was a powerful Shadow mage. His family never really wanted for money, but they mostly lived in DC while visiting his mother's side of the family in Italy for the holidays. Nico had an older sister named Bianca who he was close to. She was basically his best friend and hero. He also considered his cousin, Lapis, like she was another older sister to him.
For a time, his life was pretty good. Great, even. His magic hadn't manifested yet, but it was normal in their family for it to show up somewhat late. It was when Bianca manifested her magic at 11 years old that things began to change. Their parents never treated them differently, other than by adding magic lessons for Bianca. However, their extended family started showing favoritism to Bianca. At first, it was just little things like getting her slightly nicer gifts than Nico or letting her get a little more time to play than her little brother. Nico didn't really notice it at the time, but when his sister formed a pact with Artemis and became one of her Hunters? That was when the favoritism became more blatant.
It was hard to not resent his sister, but he thought he did a pretty good job at keeping himself from growing too bitter at her specifically. It helped that Bianca was uncomfortable with the attention and that his parents vocally disapproved of their treatment to their kids. Mostly, Nico just didn't like that Artemis took up his big sister's time and that the other girl Hunters made her distance herself from him because he was a boy. He was never sure why, but every time she left on a quest to hunt down a monster had him feeling a terrible dread. It felt like something horrible was about to happen to her. Bianca always came back okay, if at varying degrees of injury, but he could never shake the feeling.
He was around eight or nine when he got the news that Lapis and her family died. She'd told him a few days prior to her death that something scary had been following her. Nico was inconsolable, but Bianca was there to support him. She promised him that he'd find whatever did this and make sure it didn't hurt anyone else again.
Two or three years later, Bianca found that thing and died for it.
After the funeral, his parents left him with his grandmother for a little while to take care of some things with the funeral director. His grandmother had looked at him coldly with tears running down her face and told him, "It should've been you." Then, she left him all alone at Bianca's grave. Nico gave into his grief-fueled anger and began to yell at Artemis, laying the blame of his sister's death at her feet. In response, Artemis cursed Nico for his alleged impudence and thus did his grudge against the goddess fully blossom in his heart, nurtured by grief. No matter what, even if the entire world burned for it, Nico would never lift a finger to help Artemis and her followers.
His power over Water began to manifest after that, but it was noticeably weak or useless abilities. Once, Nico was trying to take a shower, but immediately his legs transformed into a mermaid tail and he fell. He was extremely fortunate that he wasn't too injured from the fall, but that made life uniquely challenging. He could also speak fluent fish, and was uncomfortably aware of the moon's location. Frankly, Nico became a disappointment to his family. Even his father fell into that mindset, though his mother didn't. She seemed to understand.
As soon as he graduated high school, Nico chose to go to Kaisou University because it was far away from his family. He was also hired by Zodiac to work at an entry level position part-time while he went to get his core classes completed. He wasn't sure what, exactly, he wanted to work towards for a career. Nico also applied as an intern on the Jackdaw since his powers were actually pretty well suited for the job.
AU Personality Differences: 💀 Nico goes out of his way to make Janet wish she could quit, but his work ethic is infuriatingly stellar so it's difficult to fire him. So he always gets the shitty part of the office as his assigned seating.
💀 He's only a little more willing to socialize and make friends, but not by much.
