( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
- ★ NAME: Nico di Angelo
- ★ AGE: 14
- ★ CANON INFORMATION: Nico
- ★ PERSONALITY: This guy is, in the wise words of Dionysus, a "troubled young man." Nico is pretty distant to people he doesn't know, and it only lessens slightly to people he does know. He has an easier time talking to the dead than he does to the living. He can be sarcastic and his words can be as sharp as knives. Even his soft side can lead to more sarcasm and sharpness rather than less. Nico comes off as aloof and creepy to many people, if only mostly because he's a son of the Underworld.

He doesn't look like much, but Nico is a tough kid. He's endured pain and loss ever since he was 10 years old, and he's learned to accept that these are part of life. The death of his older sister, Bianca, drives this lesson home to Nico after failing to bring her back to life. Nico is forced to mature and grow up at a young age as a result of this. He even looks older than he should. He can also be tough to read, at least in so far as reading his motives. Nico doesn't let many people know what he's actually thinking or feeling. The only person he confides in other than Bianca di Angelo is his half-sister, Hazel, and even then he doesn't do that very often.

Nico keeps to himself and he prefers it that way. He doesn't feel like he'll ever be accepted by other demigods, something he's mentioned more than once over the course of the series. He knows it's because he's a son of Hades, though it's later revealed that this fear runs even deeper than who his godly parent is. Nico is afraid of rejection, and because of that he hides from everyone, a trait that Jason Grace eventually calls him out on. It's not that he wants to be alone, but loneliness to him is better than having a friend reject him for who he is.

The kid is an incredibly stubborn individual, especially if he really wants something. He adamantly refuses to hear "no" from Hades when he doesn't give up more information about his mother, just for an example. This stubbornness can get him into trouble, like when he hands Percy over to Hades in exchange for information. The trait even extends to how Nico doesn't back down, not to his father and not to anyone else. For example, he doesn't hesitate to backtalk Persephone when he meets her, even if it's not the smartest of choices.

Despite his mistakes and the fact that it's hard to get exceptionally close to him, Nico is fiercely loyal to those friends. His faith in them is also almost unshakable. Percy and Annabeth are perhaps the best examples of this. After the two fall into Tartarus, Nico is positive that the two will make it out of there alive as long as they have each other. His loyalty to them is unswerving, and is what leads him to promising Percy to take the others to the Doors of Death. Nico's strongest ties, though, are to his family. He might stick up for himself when Hades doesn't listen to reason, but that doesn't mean he isn't loyal to his father. He'll do a lot to make his father happy and proud of having Nico as a son. He'll also do everything he can to make sure Hazel stays alive, since she's the only remaining family member he has left.

Nico's fatal flaw is something he shares with all children of Hades. He holds a grudge like no other. It's hard for him to let go. Even if the fate of the whole world is in the balance, if he has a grudge against someone fighting to save it, he might just say, "screw you" and walk off. After The Battle of the Labyrinth, Nico has learned to forgive and tries his best to not let it get the better of him. He tries not to get angry very much, too, especially since strong emotions like anger and nervousness can lead to unfortunate consequences due to his powers.

And then Tartarus happens. Going through what is essentially Hell changes Nico dramatically. He becomes more reclusive and distant to people. He doesn't believe people will ever accept him, that the only one who did (Bianca) is now dead and gone, as he says to Jason during House of Hades. Nico stays as far from people as he can while on the Argo II, and reacts harshly when people touch him. Even his appetite decreases dramatically. The last major change is that he's more angry, though it seems to be directed mostly at himself. Even a slight implication that Nico can't do something will get him to growl at someone.

One of his most important relationships has been the one with his older sister, Bianca. He loves her with all his heart, and it's shown clearly within the first few moments of first meeting him in The Titan's Curse. When the manticore tells her to shut up, he immediately tells it to not speak to his sister like that. Nico is very much upset when Bianca tells him she's joining the Hunters, and is almost consumed by his grief at her death. It's difficult for him to let her go, as evidenced in The Battle of the Labyrinth when he tries to bring her back. Even in Son of Neptune, he tries to bring her soul to the land of the living, but fails since she chooses rebirth.

Hazel is most certainly a very important relationship Nico has. She's his Roman half-sister, and loves her just as much as he does Bianca. He brings her back from the dead to have a second chance for Elysium, and also for his own reason, which is to have a sister again. Probably the most profound way to see how much Nico cares for her is that she's the first person he willingly shows physical affection for since The Titan's Curse. Nico almost never willingly touches anyone, let alone kiss their cheek, and he does this twice for Hazel in The House of Hades.

Percy Jackson has also had a major impact on his life. The kid saves both di Angelo's lives, and convinces Nico to join the side of the good guys. It's because of Percy that he gets his father to join in the Second Titan War, and it's because of the son of Poseidon that Nico learns from Bianca about his fatal flaw. He's Nico's first crush, which is what causes Nico to leave camp in addition to his fear of his blooming powers. This is also what leads him to come out to Cupid and Jason in an explosive way, and explains why he's done all he can to honor his promise to take the crew to Epirus. Nico does a lot for Percy, and there's a part of Nico that hates himself for it.

Jason Grace recently became an important relationship for Nico to have because he's essentially shoving his friendship feelings on the son of Hades. After the Cupid thing, he's being forced to trust the ex-praetor to not tell anyone about his secret. In return, Jason has to trust him, which Nico challenges him on by saying, "If you trust me, then drink the cup of poison." Which Jason does in literally a nanosecond. Still, Nico does give Jason some respect, and he does trust the son of Jupiter's orders when he issues them.

The rest of the time, Nico seems more neutral with everyone else aboard the Argo II. He might treat Piper with slightly more warmth since she saves his life during The Mark of Athena. Leo is most likely on the tail end of Nico's "People He's Okay With" list, though, since he usually back-talks like it's going out of style.

- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Seelie
- ★ ABILITIES: Nico's powers over the dead are his strongest. He can raise zombie warriors, commune with ghosts, and command the undead to do his bidding. He's even been known to silence spirits, and differences in culture doesn't seem to matter since he's done exactly this to the Roman Lares, though he's the son of a Greek god. Nico has to be careful with his emotions as nervousness and anger can cause him to lose control over his abilities. For example, once when he was nervous, he caused the grass around him to wilt and die.

Another ability he has is Shadow Travel, which allows him to travel long distances by using the shadows. It takes a lot of energy from him, more than raising the dead, so he has to make sure he regains his strength between jumps. This form of travel can also be waylaid by the gods, as Persephone has demonstrated once before by taking him from a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana to New York City, New York. It also leaves him vulnerable if it's a long-distance jump, as more distance means more energy sapped from him.

Nico can tell when someone is about to die or if they're in danger. This ability is strong enough to kick in with people he's not close to, but it only works for mortal souls. He can't sense those of nature spirits or monsters because they have a different "shape" or "feel" in comparison.

He does have some power over the earth, able to create fissures and erect walls of stone or obsidian. However, it's clearly not his best skill in comparison to his powers over the dead.

As a child of Hades, Nico can also see the Underworld as it really is, and is implied to see even Tartarus as it truly is.

Nico has sharp eyesight, as has been mentioned on more than one occasion in House of Hades. He's also extremely quiet, able to walk right up to people without noticing him until he speaks or they turn around.

Nico was in the library, and had been for some hours, now. That was unusual for a dyslexic, ADHD teenager, but he had important things to research. He needed information on what the ghosts and other spirits were like in this world. Recognizing them, banishing them, anything that could help him familiarize himself with the more spiritual inhabitants. Nico was about 90% sure that he would need to find out as much as he could with the available resources before setting out to take a look around the countryside. Being a child of the Underworld could be problematic in those cases.

He glanced over at his current ghostly companion. She was apparently a librarian and had been delighted that he could not only see her, but communicate with her as well. Nico had asked the ghost rather than the living one mostly because the ghost looked a little lonely. He'd always gotten along better with ghosts than he did living people anyway. Plus, if the other librarian had given him a peculiar look, he had probably never noticed or didn't care. The ghost seemed to be waiting patiently to see if he had anything else that might help in his endeavor.

He flipped through the pages, puzzling out the words with only some difficulty. Nico had learned a couple of tricks to help with reading, but it was still slow work compared to someone without dyslexia. The son of Hades placed it down after a moment with a sigh, rubbing his eyes. He was starting to strain them, which meant that a rest was in order. Nico glanced around to get a gauge on how long he'd been there, and sighed when he figured that it must have been close to three or four hours. He stretched and all of his muscles protested at once about how awful his reading position had been for the past several hours. Still, it wasn't that he was complaining. He actually found what he'd read fascinating, especially about the Will'O Wisps. Nico even hoped that maybe he could meet one of them at some point.

Thinking about that reminded him of his recent visit to Split, though. Whatever good feelings he'd had at the thought of Will'O Wisps evaporated in an instant, and he scowled at the book in front of him like it had insulted his mother. This was stupid. Nico had a better time dealing with ghosts than he did people. Heck, there were some people who dealt better with animals or machines than other human beings. He rubbed his face in irritation, and looked over at his ghostly companion.

"I think I'm going to take a break from reading about ghosts for now. Do you have any detailed maps of the countries?" he asked her. She smiled as she led him to the section, making some suggestions on what books were better to start with.
